| If each household in the U.S. replaced its existing appliances with new efficient models, we’d eliminate 175 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year. Try these energy saving tips. |

| If you don’t already use the energy-saving settings on your major appliances, now is a good time to start. Only run your dishwasher when you have a full load, and get in the habit of using the energy-saving settings that are offered. By doing so, you can save 100 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year. Check to see if your water heater is insulated with fiberglass or foam. If it is insulated with fiberglass, it clearly will benefit from a water heater blanket. To check insulation, look near the pilot light on gas heaters, and near the thermostat on electric heaters. Note: it is a good idea to turn off the power when checking electrical devices. Set your water heater thermostat no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This will save 1,500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year. Refrigerators eat up the most electricity in the household. Maximize efficiency by keeping the fridge at 37°F. and the freezer at 0°F. Clean your refrigerator condenser coils at least once a year. There is usually a dust-bunny haven underneath the refrigerator causing it to work overtime; take off the front kick plate to clean its coils that lay underneath. To minimize the energy you use while doing laundry, wash full loads of laundry in cold water. Think, “weight” when you use your dryer and dry heavier clothes together for maximum efficiency. To use the least amount of energy, hang or line dry clothes. Make it a habit to always check your water level and drying temperatures before you start a load of laundry. When you can afford a new appliance, look for the Energy Star label for the most efficient models. |
