Plastic bags begin as non-renewable petrochemical substances (petroleum, natural gas, coal).
Global reserves of oil are expected to run dry in approximately 80 years, natural gas in 70 years, and coal in 700 years, with the predicted economic impact to hit much sooner.
Plastic bags never biodegrade — when they break down, their plastic particles remain polymers that attract other toxic chemicals that have been released into the environment. Once adjoined, these mutant particles can reach levels of toxicity up to 100 times the norm.
