| 4 to 5 trillion plastic bags are manufactured worldwide per year.
Plastic bags begin as non-renewable petrochemical substances (petroleum, natural gas, coal). Global reserves of oil are expected to run dry in approximately 80 years, natural gas in 70 years, and coal in 700 years, with the predicted economic impact to hit much sooner. Plastic bags never biodegrade — when they break down, their plastic particles remain polymers that attract other toxic chemicals that have been released into the environment. Once adjoined, these mutant particles can reach levels of toxicity up to 100 times the norm. Discarded plastic contaminates soil, water supplies, and enters the food web. Plastic in all forms, can choke, strangle, poison, and starve wildlife. When an animal dies, the plastic is again free to repeat its deadly cycle. In some sections of the ocean, particles of plastic debris are found from the surface water to 100 feet deep. Plankton are considered to be one of the most important organisms on Earth due to the food supply they provide to most aquatic life. There are areas in the ocean where the ratio is 6 pounds of plastic per 1 pound of plankton. |
